Together, We Can Make a Difference in Our Communities.

Important to Our Communities?

Why Are Community Interest Companies (CICs) Important to Our Communities?

Communities across the UK are experiencing increasing social, economic and health challenges. Rising poverty, poor mental health, domestic abuse, social isolation, neurodiversity, unemployment and increasing pressure on public services have created significant gaps in support. Community Interest Companies (CICs) play a vital role in addressing these challenges by delivering innovative, community-led solutions that improve lives, reduce inequalities and create lasting social impact.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

Mental health is one of the UK's fastest-growing public health challenges. Around 1 in 5 children and young people (aged 8–25) in England have a probable mental health disorder, while anxiety, depression and loneliness continue to affect millions of adults. Community-based wellbeing programmes provide early intervention, reduce stigma and offer safe spaces where individuals can access support before reaching crisis point.

Maternal & Postnatal Mental Health

Approximately 1 in 5 women experience a mental health problem during pregnancy or within the first year after birth. Early support for mothers, babies and families strengthens parent-child relationships, improves emotional wellbeing and gives children the best possible start in life.

Men's Mental Health

Men are significantly less likely to seek help for their mental health, yet suicide remains one of the leading causes of death for men under 50 in the UK. Community initiatives encourage men to connect, talk openly, build resilience and access support in safe, non-judgemental environments.

Child Poverty

Around 4.5 million children across the UK are living in relative poverty. Poverty affects health, education, confidence and future opportunities. Early intervention helps children develop the skills, resilience and support they need to thrive regardless of their circumstances.

Domestic Abuse

An estimated 3.8 million adults in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2025. Domestic abuse impacts women, men and children and often leads to trauma, poor mental health, homelessness, financial hardship and social isolation. Community organisations provide safe spaces, emotional support, practical guidance and recovery programmes that help individuals rebuild confidence, independence and hope.

Neurodiversity & Additional Needs

Demand for neurodiversity support continues to increase across the UK. Greater awareness and improved assessment pathways have led to a significant rise in autism and ADHD referrals, with recorded autism diagnoses increasing by 787% between 1998 and 2018. Around 15–20% of the population is estimated to be neurodivergent. Many children, young people and adults continue to face lengthy waiting lists and barriers to education, employment and independent living. Inclusive community programmes help individuals build confidence, develop life skills and reach their full potential.

Social Isolation & Loneliness

Around 1 in 4 adults report feeling lonely at least some of the time. Older people, unpaid carers, disabled people and young adults are particularly affected. Strong social connections improve mental wellbeing, physical health and community resilience, helping people feel valued, connected and supported.

Supporting Vulnerable Children, Young People & Families

Every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, included and achieve their full potential. Many families face challenges including poverty, poor mental health, domestic abuse, disability, neurodiversity, caring responsibilities and limited access to positive activities. CICs provide safe, inclusive environments where children and young people can access mentoring, wellbeing programmes, education, creative activities, life skills and positive role models. Parents and carers also benefit through family support, parenting programmes, peer networks and practical guidance, helping to strengthen family relationships and reduce isolation.

Supporting Vulnerable Adults

Many adults experience complex challenges including poor mental health, disability, long-term health conditions, financial hardship, unemployment and social exclusion. Community-led support helps individuals gain confidence, develop new skills, improve independence and reconnect with their communities.

Employment, Skills & Enterprise

Meaningful employment improves confidence, financial stability and wellbeing. CICs help people develop employability skills, digital confidence, work experience, mentoring and enterprise opportunities, enabling individuals to secure sustainable employment or start their own businesses.

Cost of Living & Financial Wellbeing

The rising cost of living continues to place pressure on households across the UK. Community organisations provide budgeting advice, financial wellbeing programmes, food support, warm spaces and practical guidance that helps families become more resilient during difficult times.

Disability, Accessibility & Inclusion

Everyone deserves equal opportunities to participate in community life. CICs create accessible, inclusive environments that remove barriers for disabled people by offering adapted activities, independent living support, accessible education and opportunities for social inclusion.

Supporting Older People

As the UK's population ages, more people are experiencing loneliness, declining health and reduced social interaction. Community groups, exercise classes, dementia-friendly activities, befriending services and social clubs help older adults remain active, connected and independent.

Health Inequalities & Prevention

People living in deprived communities often experience poorer health outcomes and shorter healthy life expectancy. National priorities increasingly focus on prevention, early intervention and tackling health inequalities before problems escalate. Community-based programmes improve wellbeing while reducing long-term pressure on health and social care services.

Community Safety & Crime Prevention

Early intervention, mentoring and positive activities help reduce anti-social behaviour, youth violence and exploitation. Providing safe spaces and trusted adults enables children and young people to make positive choices and build brighter futures.

Environment & Community Wellbeing

Environmental projects such as community gardens, repair cafés, recycling initiatives and green spaces improve both physical and mental wellbeing while encouraging people to work together and take pride in their local communities.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Every individual deserves equal access to opportunities, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, income or personal circumstances. By providing free or heavily subsidised grant-funded programmes, CICs remove financial barriers and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate, learn, develop and thrive. Inclusive services promote equality of opportunity, celebrate diversity and strengthen community cohesion.

Filling the Gaps in Community Services

Public services continue to face increasing demand alongside limited resources. Community Interest Companies work in partnership with the NHS, local authorities, schools, businesses and voluntary organisations to complement existing services by responding quickly to emerging local needs. Their close relationship with the communities they serve allows them to identify unmet needs, develop innovative solutions and deliver personalised support where it is needed most.

Creating Lasting Social Impact

Community Interest Companies are more than organisations, they are catalysts for positive change. They empower individuals, strengthen families, improve health and wellbeing, reduce inequalities and create opportunities for people of all ages. Through collaboration, innovation and community engagement, CICs help build healthier, safer, more inclusive and resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to belong, contribute and thrive.
